8MASKS

Thanking the Keyworkers of Covid-19 through physical and digital masks

Using only the materials she happened to have in Lockdown with her Freyja Sewell set out to say a visual thank you to all 8 groups of Key Workers. She wanted to turn her suddenly free evenings, weekends and canceled work time into something positive. She used only recycled, reclaimed and biodegradable materials in the building of the masks and costumes. The images draw from science fiction, Buddhist paintings and religious motifs to create high status images that celebrate these incredible individuals.

She wanted to express her gratitude to all those people who have remained working. She also wanted to bring attention to the wide variety of jobs and services that have been keeping our society rolling:

Food, Healthcare, Transport, Technology, Emergency Services, Government, Communications, Childcare

By intentionally glamourizing the facemask Freyja hopes to encourage others to wear, werk and celebrate their choice to protect others by wearing one in public spaces. Facemasks save lives.

The masks exploded into the virtual world and appeared internationally on magazine covers, blogs, articles and more. Freyja was then asked to create some digital counterparts to by @unveiled_ukc as part of their exhibition experience, resulting in 3 unique Instagram filters for thanking the Keyworkers.
