KAMI/HOCKNEY

Cherry tree installation for David Hockney in Waterstones Picadilly Circus

Freyja used her KAMI design to create a cheery tree inspired sculpture to celebrate the launch of David Hockney’s new book Spring. The work was installed into Waterstones Piccadilly Circus. Comprised of around 1000 hand woven recycled paper ‘flowers’, or 44,000 paper ‘petals’, suspended using second hand tent poles and biodegradable cotton rope.

The modular paper system which makes KAMI is inspired by Japanese Abundance Textures, which are created by hundreds, or even thousands, of small separate components, each item is slightly different and so individual, which combine to create a unified, harmonious whole. Examples of Abundance Textures are seen in cherry blossoms, paper tags at temples or tiny pebbles in a sand garden.

”I wanted to create a riot of colour and joy that comes together to help us feel the abundance and energy of Spring.🌸”
